Steven Spielberg was born in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1946. He went to California State University Long Beach, but he later dropped out of it to pursue his dreams of working in the entertainment industry. He worked as an unaccredited assistant editor on the Western Wagon Train. Some of his early directing efforts include The Last Gun, Battle Squad and Escape to Nowhere. All of these were short films. Spierlberg directed a couple of movies over the years which would portend his future career in the film industry. These films were Firelight, Slipstream and Amblin’. Spielberg has a particular style in his movies. For instance the theme of father problems. The movies The Encounters of the Third Kind and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull both show that fatherhood is something to be feared of avoided. Streams of light is also something that features in a lot of Steven Spielberg films. Streams of light are featured in Schindler’s List and War Horse. Awestruck faces also appear to be in a lot of his movies, for example in Jurrasic Park. These are known as the ‘Spielberg faces’.

One shot that Steven Spielberg uses over and over again in his movies is the shot where a character sees something through a window, windshield or other piece of glass. The camera sits on the opposite side so that we see what they are seeing as well as the expression on their face as they see it. This removes the need for any cutaway shots. The picture below shows the shot in Jaws.
